The summit of the mountain was carefully protected and geared for defensive purposes. A fortification or enclosing wall of just under a kilometre in length follows almost the entire interior rim of the summit. The western edge, which is practically inaccessible, may have been left unfortified in places. A rectangular tower located on a rocky outcrop and facing the southern entrance (dimensions 5 x 6.5 m, interior dimensions 5 x 3.5m) was completely excavated between 2008 and 2009. It was part of the enclosing wall, fixed in mortar and its outward appearance was dominated by massive buttresses constructed at regular intervals.
