| Historically part of the municipality of Vigo Lomaso, the summit of Monte San Martino gradually became overgrown with beech and deciduous forest as the traditional types of land use (pastoral economy and lumber rights) decreased more and more. Masonry remains visible in the undergrowth had generally been linked with a usage and occupation of the mountain in the past but had never been dated or interpreted precisely. The only remains easily interpreted were the ruins of the small church of San Martino. The exact date of its construction was uncertain for a long time, but the church had always been visited by pilgrims and processions until its collapse in the middle of the last century when it slowly faded into oblivion (click to enlarge). |
