In 2008 and 2009, the ‘Kommission zur vergleichenden Archäologie römischer Alpen- und Donauländer’ of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities began to examine the northwestern section of the mountain. A lime and mortar layer overlying the natural soil from Antiquity marked the beginning of the occupation of the castrum. On top of this lay a linear concentration of gravel accompanied by clearance cairns. At this stage, the gravel is interpreted as some kind of track, while the cairns may have been substructures for buildings made of timber or other materials. As the excavation work continues, the role played by this area inside the complex (residential structures, workshops, crafts?) will become apparent. The finds (pottery, metal artefacts, items of clothing, glass fragments) suggest that the area was used between the 5th and the 6th/7th centuries.
